The need to have doors and windows with thin profiles but still capable of ensuring a thermal transmittance Uw of less than 1.4 W/m2K, has led to the selection of the Eku 66 TT High Performance series for a building in Monza that hosts a restaurant and several mini-apartments.
The building standing at the corner of Via Lombardia with Piazza Virgilio in the Italian city of Monza has been completely renovated to host a new restaurant. The establishment – explains Giuseppe Perino of TS Aludesign – occupies the entire ground floor and most of the first floor. The remaining space consists of mini-apartments for lease. To date, the works have been carried out on the street-side of the building. Soon, probably, the same work will be done to the areas looking out onto the internal courtyard.
The project involved the complete remaking of the outer cladding as well as of the insulation system that was entirely missing. A finishing coat was applied to the façade that was then repainted. «We were obligated to keep the same colours as before» explains the architect, Monica Lucchini, «and we could not change the number or width of the apertures due to an environmental restriction».
«So we decided to use systems that could provide as large a glazed surface as possible for both the restaurant’s ‘shop windows’ and for the internal French windows, in order to exploit the natural lighting to the utmost. On the ground floor, we also performed rather significant structural works to sustain the walls and the upper storeys after making a few new apertures that would expand the space of the rooms and make some of them interconnect».
High performance in terms of thermal transmittance and sound reduction
The Eku 66 TT HPS system was selected to create both the full-height windows and the door with transom window in the restaurant area, and the casement windows and doors of the upper storeys. Thanks to the smaller section of the profiles of this series, in fact, it was possible to have thermal break doors and windows with a larger glazed surface and with very high levels of thermal transmittance, thanks to the use of insulating bars, gaskets and inserts made with new materials featuring very low lambda values. «The standards to be applied in the Lombardy Region requires a thermal transmittance Uw lower than 1.4 W/m2K for this type of works, and this product gave us just that» underlines Giuseppe Perino.
«On the floors above the restaurant, we also installed Eku aluminum louver shutters with RAL 7035 (light grey) finishing, while RAL 7043, a darker grey called Traffic grey B, was used for the doors and windows B. The result is excellent: Eku 66 TT HP smoothly integrated with the context of the façade thanks to its lightness and essential lines, while fully providing the thermal and sound insulation characteristics required by the project»..
